Republic Services' Apex Landfill Renewable Energy Generating Facility Project Now Under Way

LAS VEGAS, Nev – April 21, 2011– Republic Services (NYSE: RSG) and Energenic announce the Apex landfill renewable energy generating facility construction ground breaking.  Republic Services retained project partner Energenic to design, build, operate and maintain the facility at the nation’s largest landfill.  NV Energy entered into a 20-year power purchase agreement for the sale of energy produced from the 11-megawatt gas powered facility.     

Energenic will use landfill gas-extracted from a series of wells at the landfill and use that gas in a state-of-the-art turbine-generator to make renewable electricity for NV Energy customers.  During its operational lifetime, the project will capture an estimated 60 to 90 percent of the methane created by the landfill.  The captured methane is converted to water and carbon dioxide when the gas is burned to produce electricity.   

Using landfill-gas in this manner reduces the dependence on other natural resources and improves air quality and carbon emissions.  Harnessing the power of landfill gas energy provides environmental and economic benefits to landfills, energy users and local communities as well as supporting green job creation in the economy. The project is expected to begin operation by late 2011.     

The more than 500 currently operating landfill gas energy projects nationwide provide greenhouse gas reduction benefits that are equivalent to carbon sequestered annually by nearly 20 million acres of pine and fir forests, carbon dioxide emissions from 216 barrels of oil consumed, and annual greenhouse gas emissions from nearly 18 million passenger vehicles.  These projects provide enough energy to power more than 940,000 homes and heat more than 722,000 homes annually.

The gas powered facility is one of more than 35 existing or proposed renewable energy facilities benefitting NV Energy customers in Nevada.  The project will assist in meeting Nevada’s renewable energy portfolio standard recently increased by state legislature.  The standard requires that 25 percent of NV Energy’s sales be generated by renewable resources and energy efficiency and conservation programs by 2025.
